God is like…

This past school year, the Middle school ministry learned about who God is. We went through a book entitled “Pictures of God.” Through our study, we compared God to an Inventor, a Listener, a Baby, and a Potter. We showed how each one of these analogies gives us a small picture into the nature of God. Now each one of these analogies pales in comparison to the majesty of our God, but for many of our middle school students, it has been a great way to show God to them in a way they can understand. Through this study, I, myself, have been motivated to ask the question, “Who or what is like God to which we can compare Him?” And I’ve been humbled, because we can’t adequately answer this question. God is infinitely beyond our comprehension and there is no comparison to His greatness. Psalm 145:3 is clear that “Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised, And His greatness is unsearchable.” (NASB)

For a long time, the majesty of God was intimidating and His mysterious nature even frightening to me. I would ask, “how can we worship and serve a God that we’ll never completely see or comprehend?” But now I am comforted because it is His majesty and mystery that draws us closer to Him. Yes, God has revealed Himself to us in the Bible, but we must understand that the Bible hardly scratches the surface as to His full glory. And even, if we could reduce God to the lowest common denominator in order to put Him in a box where everything fits perfectly, that wouldn’t be a God worth worshipping. It is His unsearchability that will lead us to spend all of eternity learning more and more about God and seeking Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.

When I was born my parents gave me the middle name Michael after my uncle. While they may not have intended this at the time, this name has become a constant reminder to me of the nature of God. Michael is a Hebrew name meaning, “Who is like God?” And the answer is: no one.
