The dictionary defines a rebel as someone who goes against accepted cultural standards and norms. Now, traditionally we think of a rebel in terms of someone who is the bad guy or an outlaw; someone you don’t want to meet alone in a dark alley and someone you certainly don’t want your daughter bringing home for dinner. But as we look at our society today and the accepted culture in which we live, everyone seems to look like what we have traditionally thought of as a rebel. Teenage pregnancy is rampant; drug and alcohol abuse is destroying our families and youth like a disease; divorce rates are at record highs in our society as well as in the Church; traditional families are being cast aside in favor of more tolerant and so-called more loving environments.
If our culture is characterized by what we traditionally understand as rebellion, is it really rebellion? If the rebellion has become the accepted culture, has it not ceased to be a rebellion? We as followers of Jesus are called to rebel against that culture. We need a New Rebellion.
We need a rebellion that is characterized by loving God with all of our hearts; by reading our Bible and living in accordance with God’s Word; by loving one another; by teaching our children to respect one another and consider others more important than themselves and to keep themselves pure until marriage. Our culture has become so opposed to the teaching of God that we as Christians can no longer embrace its values. We need a return to the values of God. We need to start a new rebellion.
